Marcellino was commissioned to produce the cover art for the 1984 reissue of Lessing's novel that was originally published in 1962. This edition solidified the reputation of the book as a modern classic, and Marcellino's design of the four colored notebooks at the core of the novel remain inextricably linked to the text itself for readers of a later generation. Time Magazine included the novel in its 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005 and it has remained in print since its publication. In 2007 Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
