FRED TAYLOR HENLEY BRIDGE. Circa 1930.
39 3/4x49 3/4 inches. Waterlow & Sons, London.
Condition B: losses in bottom corners and margin; vertical crease; repaired tears at edges. Framed.
A gloriously sunny day on the river in Henley with people out in skulls and punts with the Church of St. Mary's in the distance. Famed for the rowing Regatta which has taken place every summer since 1839 (the Regatta became the Royal Regatta in 1851 when Prince Albert became the patron for the event), Henley-on-Thames is located in Oxfordshire. The five arch bridge was built in 1786 and until 1885 was very close to the finish line of the race (currently the finish line is about a half mile upstream from the bridge). The edifice pictured next to the bridge is currently the pub of Angel on the Bridge, and the only pub in Henley with river frontage, it seems to have been serving a similar function in the 1930s.
