FREDERICK BURR OPPER (1857-1937)
"Sunday Night Meeting," anarchists and police. 2-panel sequence published in Puck magazine, May 18, 1887. Pen and ink on paper. 8 1/2 x 9 5/8 inches each. Signed "F. Opper" in 2nd panel.

Fantastic lot of 2 sequential cartoon panels by pioneering cartoonist and comic strip artist, Frederick Burr Opper. The cartoon features a group of German anarchists in the first panel boldly discussing their plans for the police (to paraphrase from the stereotypically accented dialogue) "When the hour arrives for the great uprising of the people, and the red flag is floating proudly over the capitol in Washington." In the second panel, one of their cohorts bursts into the door an says (in essence), 'Look out! There was a policeman standing on the corner!" at which the group runs for cover.

It is very uncommon for complete multi-panel 19th century Opper cartoons to have remained together, and few known examples have been successfully matched to a publication as these have.
