FREDERICK C. HERRICK (1887-1970) LONDON'S UNDERGROUND / NIGHTLY CARNIVAL. 1924.
39x48 3/4 inches, 99x124 cm. The Baynard Press, London.
Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, creases, wrinkles and restoration in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Almost all of Herrick's posters are marked by an elegant, Art Deco stylization, and indeed, he was the only British artist to participate in the famed 1925 Parisian Exposition Internationales des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Not only a poster designer, he was also in charge of the Baynard Press in London. Here, in a cosmic, fresco-style image, he depicts cherubs flitting about constellations which represent Underground stops, with an elegantly arrayed list of London's theatres (and their corresponding locations on the "map") on either side. Metzl p. 135.
