This painting is a strong example of Fred Jones' mid-career work, capturing a figure in movement with a gradation of highly saturated colors. Jones studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, alongside artists such as Eldzier Cortor, Charles Sebree and Charles White. He joined this group of Chicago artists in the founding of the South Side Community Art Center in Bronzeville in the early 1940s.
