Douglass reflects on the life of the abolitionist judge William Jay (1789-1858), who played an important role in the American Anti-Slavery Society. Douglass describes him as "a good and great man." The pamphlet concludes with two long poems by other authors commemorating British abolitionists Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce.
