FREDERICK DOUGLASS. His autograph statement on voting rights for "all the people without distinction of race or color." Autograph Manuscript Signed as "Fred'k Douglass," 6¾ x 5¼ inches, reading "The foundations of this republic can never rest secure till equal suffrage is extended to all the people without distinction of race or color"; mat toning in margins, mount remnants on verso. No place, 1866

Additional Details

This is an original statement by Douglass, rather than a quotation from his published works. It is consistent in style and substance with his work immediately following the war, as abolitionists pivoted toward voting rights. The leaf has a trace of gilt on the right and bottom edges, and was possibly excised from an autograph book.
