FREDERICK H. DANKER (DATES UNKNOWN)

HARVARD'S BALL / CHAMPIONSHIP '98. 1898.

24¼x18 inches, 61½x45¾ cm. Geo. H. Walker Co., Boston.
Condition B: replaced losses, extensive repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges; creases and overpainting in image and along horizontal fold; miniature caricature inserted in lower right image.

A rare piece of Harvard football ephemera, listing head coach William Cameron Forbes, in his 2nd year as such, along with the trainer and team roster. The score of 17-0 from their November 19th win against Yale, is touted at the bottom left. According to the New York Times issue printed the following day, "A series of glowing Autumn showers began early last night and stopped exactly two minutes before time was called for the end of the second half. . . It fell the heaviest during the heat of the game, but from start to finish 17,500 people sat in it just to cheer and yell for their favorite teams, seemingly unconscious of the ultimate consequences."
