Allan Randall Freelon Sr. (1895-1960), has an impressive biography: early talent won him a full scholarship to the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and he later earned degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple's Tyler School of Art. After serving in WWI he began teaching in Philadelphia public schools, becoming supervisor of art instruction for the entire school district. According to one biographer, he was the first African-American to hold such a position anywhere in the U.S.
