Additional Details

After the Civil War, Fremont became a railroad speculator, attempting to create a route to the Pacific, for which he received Senate authorization for the right of way through the territories in 1869. However, he misinformed French bond agents that the bonds would be guaranteed by the U.S. Fremont was convicted of fraud (in absentia) by the French government and the route failed.
