Jared French by Jared French, 461 (this print).
Jared French married Margaret Hoening in 1937, and the two began summering with fellow-artist Paul Cadmus (who considered French a mentor and muse) on Fire Island. There they formed a photographic collective called PaJaMa (a clever acronym of their first names). Their highly stylized photographs, in which they are posed in various settings and in various combinations, imply both a playful, free environment of artistic expression as well as serious exploration of body, form, and classically-influenced tableaus. Associates of the three, including George Tooker and Lincoln Kirsten, often joined them on the island, and also appear in the photographs. The images merge nature with architecture, and depict a mysteriously beautiful, quiet world where time seems remote.
