rare exhibition leaflet of french's murals. initialed by wescott: "as you see. . . fondly G." Cavalrymen Crossing a River was commissioned by the Treasury Department, Fine Arts Division, for the Richmond Virginia Post Office; "The Origins of Food," a 7-panel work for the NY State Vocational Institution, West Coxsachie, New York, was painted under the auspices of the W.P.A. New York City. Levy's note states: " . . . My best reason for exhibiting them at short notice and at an inconvenient time and in the only available space--space that does little justice to their stature--is that they should not depart unseen and unsung." Wescott and French were part of an intimate circle of friends that included George Platt Lynes, Monroe Wheeler, and Paul Cadmus. As with the majority of work from this group, strong gay imagery is prevalent in French's murals as well.
