FRENCH SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY
The Meeting of Alexander and Roxana.

Pen and brown ink and gray wash with black chalk on cream laid paper, double-sided. 260x285 mm; 10 1/4x11 1/4 inches.

Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts.

This intriguing drawing, with an almost identical composition in pen and ink on the verso, may be attributed to Jean-Antoine Julien, called Julien de Parme (Cavigliano 1736-1799 Paris). Another pen and ink and wash drawing, by Julien, The Marriage of Alexander to Roxana, sold at Christie's, London, July 7, 2008, lot 46; it is a study for the oil painting of the same subject from 1768, for the court of Parma, now in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (see Rosenberg, Julien de Parme 1736-1799, Parma, 1999-2000, number 20). That drawing was followed by another developed composition closer to the painting now in a French private collection (see Rosenberg, op. cit., number 21).
