FRIEDEL DZUBAS (1915-1994) AND KRAUSS GERMANY / XITH OLYMPIAD BERLIN. 1936.
39 3/4x25 inches, 101x63 1/2 cm. Reichsbahnzentral für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, Berlin.
Condition B+: repaired tears, restoration and creases in margins.
A photographic poster of the Quadriga, the four-horse chariot of Victory, atop Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. Curiously, an important element of the statue seems to have been removed from the photograph; the iron cross within the laurel wreath. Although this was not ultimately selected as the official poster of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, it was issued in several different languages all the same, as was the final version by Franz Wurbel. Ironically, Dzubas fled Germany in 1939 and settled in New York, where he went on to a prominent career as an abstract expressionist painter. This is the English version. Olympics p. 47.
