Additional Details

A tour de force of 19th-century photography in which Frith's engaging and witty text, which successfully merges the travelogue and art historical references, is illustrated with his remarkable photographs. Frith's pithy observations about making the photographs detail many of the difficulties of working with the wet-collodion process in this extremely hot environment. His proto-modernist photographs depict ancient ruins, exotic monuments, and sunbaked landscapes; the self-portrait in native costume is also included. (Note: the order of the photographs does not always conform to the table of contents.)<
