The Gordon Bennett Challenge, the world's largest and most prestigious gas balloon competition, was founded by a millionaire sportsman and publisher of the New York Herald and Paris Herald. In addition to the balloon competition, he also created international competitions for auto and yacht racing. "Fritz Bühler's design for the 1932 event turns a soaring orange balloon into the sun itself, hovering in the flat black space above planet earth" (Crouse p. 32).
