Fritz Blumenthal was born in Mainz, Germany where he originally pursued a medical career. After immigrating to New York in 1938, Blumenthal established himself as a painter and printmaker, exhibiting his work at galleries across New York and Germany. Most well-known for his monotypes, his works are held in the permanent collections of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Gutenberg Museum, Mainz, Germany among others. A related monotype titled Antique Shop #12 is held at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota.
