FRITZ C. RUMPF (CARL GEORG, 1888-1949) PRINCE OF WALES. Circa 1912.
27 7/8x18 1/8 inches. Curt Bendhers, Berlin.
Condition A-: creases and abrasions in margins and image. Japan.
Rumpf was a painter and an illustrator who designed a series of posters just before the First World War. The gentleman's haberdashery, Prince of Wales, was his major client (see Swann Art Nouveau Poster Auction #1945, lot 89), although he also designed posters for bars and cabarets. This classic fashion illustration highlights not only the man's elegant tie, but also his shirt and cufflinks. By cleverly making the gentleman's vest a continuation of the black background, Rumpf makes everything else stand out even more brightly. The typography is as clean, neat and well-groomed as the image itself. DFP III 2777.
