FRY, JOSHUA and JEFFERSON, PETER. A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia. Engraved 4-sheet map, joined to form two horizonal sheets, 790x1235 mm, wide margins; hand-colored in outline; minor loss in margins; tissue-backed. London, 1775

Additional Details

The scarce 1751 First Edition of the map (only 4 copies known) is by far the most important 18th Century mapping of Virginia, as it is the first to show the interior regions beyond the tidewater and to accurately depict the Appalachian Mountains. This copy, the sixth issue of the map, is the same as the 1761 impression but with a change of date in the cartouche. Cumming 449; Stevens and Tree, Comparative Cartography 87f.
