Additional Details

Fuller (1877-1968), a sculptor, was the first black American artist to draw heavily on African themes and folk tales for her subject matter. She studied in Paris under Grafly, Rodin, Rollard and others. She first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1898, and by 1902 was an established artist.
The archive contains photographs of some of her best known works, "Water Boy," "Ethiopia Awakening," "Talking Skull," and "Emancipation." In all, there are 43 photographs of various sizes, some of them annotated on the verso by Fuller. Also, a large sepia-toned portrait of her from around 1920; a photo of her husband, Solomon C. Fuller (the first African-American psychiatrist to be given a chair at a major white institution); typewritten text of the African folk-tale which served as inspiration for "Talkin Skull"; and several letters addressed to Fuller.<
