Hannah Sawbridge inherited her husband George's printing firm upon his death in 1681. She printed a number of practical titles similar to the present volume, including works by Nicholas Culpeper. Sawbridge also served in a leadership position in the Stationer's Company. Women made up approximately 8% of the population of British booksellers and printers in 16th and 17th centuries, often taking over for deceased male relatives. Women's contributions to book production, print culture, and the administration of publishing houses have been largely ignored over the centuries.
