Fotherby was Bishop of Salisbury from 1618 until 1620. The present work, rare at auction, and one of only three books published by the author, seems to have been in the possession of John Smith of Jamestown, as it is heavily quoted in his Generall Historie of Virginia, 1624. (cf. Karen Ordahl Kupperman, Indians and English: Facing Off in Early America (2000), p. 121; and Susan P. Castillo, Ivy Schweitzer, The Literatures of Colonial America: An Anthology (2001), p. 17.)
