Frissell is best-known for her fashion photography. She was one of the first photographers in the industry to work with models in natural environments outside of the traditional studio setting. In addition to fashion photographs, she also worked as photographer for the American Red Cross and Women's Air Corps during WWII where she captured images of the European front. After the War, she began to focus on photojournalism and sports photography and became the first woman staff photographer at Sports Illustrated.
