Fuchs, Samuel (1588-1630)
Metoposcopia & Ophthalmoscopia.

Strasbourg: Excudebat Theodosius Glaserus Sumptibus Pauli Ledertz, 1615.

First edition, octavo, engraved image illustrating metoscopy to title; three small portraits of dedicatees in the preliminaries; numerous small woodcut and engraved portrait text illustrations throughout; second half of contents toned, due to quality of original paper stock; bound in full contemporary limp parchment; 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.

Fuchs's work on metoscopy, a technique of determining the subject's character by interpreting the pattern of lines on the forehead, a form of physiognomy famously advanced by Cardano, also includes the first text to propose opthalmoscopia, in which the eyes are analyzed with the same objective.
