FÉLIX BUHOT
Une Matinée d'Hiver au Quai de l'Hotel Dieu.

Etching and drypoint on Japan paper, 1876. 240x322 mm; 9 1/2x12 5/8 inches, full margins. An undescribed state before the fourth state (of 15), with the artist's name and date engraved lower left, with another date partially erased to the right of the artist's name, with the title in drypoint , lower right, and other annotations in drypoint, lower right, in the 3/8-inch strip of uncleaned lower margin. Signed and inscribed "essai" in pencil, lower margin A superb, dark impression of this scarce, early state.

Like Whistler, Buhot (1847-1898) drew from everyday life in Paris and London and explored new ways of achieving dramatic tonal effects in his prints. He often combined several intaglio techniques, including etching, aquatint and drypoint, on a single plate to achieve these effects. His other notable contribution to printmaking was something he referred to as "marges symphoniques" (symphonic margins), or decorating the margins of his prints with myriad etched and drypoint sketches (see lot 85). Bourcard/Goodfriend 123.
