GABRIEL CASTAÑO
Portrait of a Woman with Closed Eyes.

Watercolor and ink on cream wove paper, 1935. 500x350 mm; 19 3/4x13 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right recto.

Cuban born Castaño, formerly a night-watchman, was discovered and supported by Grant and Jane Mason, the former an assistant manager for Pan Am in Cuba, and Ernest Hemingway. Jane Mason organized an exhibition of Castaño's paintings at the Arden Gallery in New York in 1933. The Masons also built a seaside mansion on the outskirts of Havana for which they commissioned a number of paintings from Castaño.
