Gaines (1777-1849) American General and Indian fighter, participated in the War of 1812 where he commanded the defense of Fort Erie, fought with Andrew Jackson in the First Seminole War, mounted an expedition by sea during the Second Seminole War, led a force into Nacogdoches during the Texas Revolution, and commanded the Western Department during the Mexican War.<
