Additional Details

Exceptional series of extensively hand-finished prints reproducing works by leading contemporary English painters, including Turner, Constable, Cox, Stanfield, DeWint, and Millais. The lithotint process, involving refinements in painting directly on stone, was developed around 1840 to recreate the effect of painted washes in lithography. The Belgian-born dealer Gambart (1814-1902), whose innovative practices transformed the London art market during the Victorian era, published reproductions to promote the sale of original works. Twyman, Lithography 1800-1850, page 218.
