Gandhi's remark about soybeans presumably refers to an attempt to cultivate the soybean plant in the climate of a particular region, not the lack of support for the food source. Beginning in 1935, Gandhi advocated that Indian farmers look to the soybean as a source of protein to feed India's vegetarians. Today, India has become one of the world's largest producers of soy products.
