Victor Riesel (1913-1995) was a legendary American syndicated columnist passionate about labor unions and politics. In 1956, in retaliation for Riesel's hard-hitting journalism, a gangster threw sulfuric acid in his face, permanently blinding him. (Subsequently he wore dark glasses in public.) The attack continued to make national news for over a year. Despite this, according to his New York Times obituary, "Mr. Riesel never stopped inveighing against gangster infiltration and other corruption in labor unions."
