GARRY WINOGRAND (1928-1984)
Portrait of the labor unions journalist Victor Riesel. Silver print, the image measuring 13 7/8x11 inches (35.2x27.9 cm.), with a Look magazine label with Winogrand's typed credit, caption, and date on verso. 1957

Provenance: Private Collection, California

Riesel was a pioneering labor columnist and investigative journalist reporting on gangster activity and the corruption of unions around New York in the 1950s. In April 1956, after a radio broadcast and dinner at the New York City restaurant Lindy's, he emerged at 3:00am to walk to his car on 51st Street, when he was attacked with acid thrown in his eyes, permanently blinding him. Riesel's column appeared in The Daily Mirror and was syndicated to as many as 350 newspapers at his height. The caption on this print reads "Labor Racketeer Foe."
