Additional Details

A photograph of a "charcoal portrait," inscribed by Garvey''s Black Cross Nurses "Presented by Black Cross Nurses of S.F. Div. No 148 of the U. N. I. A. & A. C. L. Drawn by Gem Art Co, 2536 California St, S.F. Cal." The Black Cross Nurses were often seen marching in brigades when Garvey''s United Negro Improvement Association paraded in New York and other cities around the country. Garvey stressed the participation of women in his movement, and the Black Cross Nurses epitomized this.
