GASTON NOURY (1866-?) POUR LES PAUVRES. 1892.
531/2x351/2 inches. Herold, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins; restoration and restored losses along vertical and horizontal folds.
Born in Le Havre, Normandy, Noury was an illustrator who settled in Paris around 1889. With only a few posters to his name it seems he was closely connected to the affichomanie of the period. He designed posters for two of the active poster dealers, Arnould and le pere Didier, and for the 3rd exposition of the Salon des Cent at La Plume. Here, for a charity event at the Tuileries to raise money for the poor in both France and Russia, Noury shows a French woman and Russian woman in a sleigh. With the pending signing of the Franco-Russian alliance, this kind of event would have been extremely au courant. Maitres pl. 39, Gold p. 124.
