Gaylord Hassan was a member of the Weusi Artist Collective, which formed in Harlem in 1965, using the Swahili word for "blackness," described by fellow collective member Ademola Olugebefola as "the philosophy of black art for black people." Hassan's work has been featured in exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, all New York.
