"During the second half of the nineteenth century New Brighton developed as a seaside town. Being within easy travelling distance of Liverpool (8 miles) and Chester (22 miles), day-trippers came from both cities, but once the railway arrived in New Brighton in 1888, and the tunnel was operational, numbers rose dramatically" (Furness vol. 6, p. 121).
