Gay Olympic Games I Silkscreen poster. 885x665 mm; 35x26 inches. 1982. Organized by Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete who had competed in Mexico City in 1968, the first Gay Olympic Games were held in San Francisco over nine days, from August 28th through September 5th. The event involved over 1300 atheltes from 10 different countries. The event, which has been held every four years since its inception, ran afoul of the International Olympic Committee, who successfully sued (prior to the opening ceremony) requiring the organizers to change the event's name to the "Gay Games."
