GEORG RUETER (1875-1966) KUNSTNIJVERHEID & VOLKSKUNST. 1918.
44x30 inches. Corns Immig, Rotterdam.
Condition B+: restored losses and creases in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
The course of Rueter's artistic life followed a classic path. He studied at the Rijks School and then the Rijks artistic Academy and went on to become a painter, graphic designer and stained glass artist. Later on in life he returned to the Rijks Academy as a teacher. For this exhibition of "The Southern Holland Society for the Promotion of Applied and Folk Art," Rueter has skillfully designed a characteristic Dutch Art Nouveau poster. Only two colors were used in the composition of the image, and the text is rigorously placed at the top and bottom of the image. Rueter brilliantly uses the white of the paper to fill the red background with elaborate decorative elements. The image epitomizes Dutch Art Nouveau. Modern Dutch 40.
