GEORGE BELLOWS
Solitude.

Lithograph on thin cream wove paper, 1917. 435x393 mm; 17x15 3/8 inches, full margins. First state (of 2). Edition of 60. Signed and numbered "No. 6" in pencil, lower margin. A very good, richly-inked impression.

Bellows described this, his only lithographic night scene, as "Central Park on a spring night. Love genuine and make believe." The title might refer to the solitary figure seated at the far left, or perhaps to the perceived solitude of the several embracing couples on the close-packed park benches. Mason 37.
