The portrait of Judge Peter J. Olney was commissioned by the Harvard Club, New York, where Olney was a former president. Rejected by the sitter for being too modern, the painting was returned to the artist. Bellows' second portrait of Olney was also rejected and more conservative artist Ellen Emmet Rand was hired; Bellows never received payment from the rejected commissions.
