GEORGE BELLOWS
Tennis.

Lithograph, 1920. 467x508 mm; 18 3/4x20 inches, full margins. Edition of 63. Signed "Geo. Bellows" and initialed "J.B.B." by the artist's daughter, Jean Bellows, in pencil, lower right. A very good, dark impression.

This lithograph is based on Bellows' Tennis at Newport, oil, 1919, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Bellows painted Tennis at Newport in his New York studio from sketches he had made the previous summer in Rhode Island. In both the painting and the lithograph, the tennis match is given a less prominent focus than the social gathering on the grounds around the court.

The annual tennis tournament at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island was an important sporting event and social occasion. The Newport Casino is now the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Mason 71.
