GEORGE BELLOWS
The Black Hand.

Brush and India ink and wash and pencil on cream wove paper, 1921. 490x610 mm; 19 1/4x24 inches. Signed and dedicated in pencil, lower margin recto.

This drawing was reproduced in The Century Magazine, volume 102, October, 1921, no. 6, page 807, where it illustrated a short story of the same title by M.L.C. Pickthall. The story chronicled the rescue of a young white man from a shipwreck by a black French sailor.

The drawing was gifted by Bellows to the dedicatee and has remained in the family ever since.
