GEORGE EDWARD HOLL KING KONG. Gouache maquette study for poster. 1933.
12 1/2x8 3/4 inches.
Condition A-: minor creases in image.
King Kong premiered on March 2nd, 1933, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The Los Angeles premiere took place on March 24th and was held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. This maquette comes with a scrapbook put together by George Edward Holl. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, letters, exhibition programs, travel brochures, lottery tickets, receipts, membership cards, sketches and maquettes. In trying to piece together Holl's life through the contents of the book, he was a movie poster artist and Art Director for several big theatres and movie companies, including MGM and Fox in the 1920s and 1930s. This image might have been intended for the cover of the program for the premier of the movie, or perhaps a poster, but there is no record of it ever having been realized.
