GEORGE GROSZ
American Landscape.

Watercolor and gouache on cream wove paper, circa 1950. 465x590 mm; 18 1/4x23 1/4 inches. Signed in watercolor, lower right recto. Ex-collection ACA Galleries, New York; private collection, New York. Sold at Swann Galleries, March 8, 2001, sale 1891, lot 240.

After bitterly departing Nazi Germany, and accepting a visiting professorship at the Art Students League, New York, in 1932, Grosz (1893-1959) emigrated permanently to the United States. Once out of Germany and influenced by new American surroundings, Grosz gradually left political propaganda behind and began caricaturing New York bystanders and landscapes (he was also a frequent summer traveler to Cape Cod, where he made numerous watercolors on and around the beach dunes). Grosz resided in Bayside, Queens, and resumed teaching at the Art Students League until 1955 when he returned to Berlin and died shortly after from a tragic fall down a flight of stairs.
