GEORGE GROSZ
New York Scene.

Watercolor and gouache and pencil on thick, cream wove paper circa 1950. 192x130 mm; 7 1/2x5 1/8 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto. Ex-collection Christian Bucheit, New York.

Christian Buchheit (1885-1974), known as "Chris," worked for the Art Students League of New York as its Building Superintendent, from 1905 until his retirement in December, 1971. In honor of his 51 years with the League, many of the "League" artists and teachers, including George Grosz, John Sloan, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Will Barnet and others paid tribute to Chris with a 50th year anniversary party, presenting him with a portfolio of watercolors, drawings and prints, including the current watercolor by Grosz.
