Burlesque blossomed in New York during the hardscrabble years of the Great Depression. Working-class and unemployed men who were willing to part with a few coins formed a ready audience. Furthermore, the burlesque stage provided a steady income for the seemingly endless number of unemployed pretty girls looking for work. By 1937, the most famous dancing girls made between $700 and $2,000 a week.
