Additional Details

An early separate printing of Washington's famous 17 September 1796 "Farewell Address." He offers prescient warnings against sectionalism, foreign entanglements, and the formation of political parties. This curiously titled volume is more often found bound with Washington's 1783 farewell to his troops, for a total of 200 pages. This 99-page edition is not listed in ESTC, but is noted in Sabin. We trace no other examples thus at auction since Parke-Bernet offered one at auction in 1947. That listing noted that "the board covers are such as were used for primers of the period," much like those seen on the present copy. Evans 33148 (200-page edition); Howes W128 (200-page edition); Sabin 101591n.
