GEORGES A. BOTTINI (1874-1907) CYCLES MÉDINGER. 1897.
50 3/4x35 1/2 inches, 129x90 cm. G. Bataille, Paris.
Condition B-: restored losses in margins and image.
Bottini, whose work was heavily influenced by Constantin Guys and Toulouse-Lautrec, was a painter and printmaker who focused on the nightlife of Montmartre. This is his only poster. In color and composition the image for a bicycle company is clearly inspired by the graphic work of Toulouse-Lautrec. It can be seen in the green ink used for the outline of the image, the use of blank space to help create the image itself, and the flat colors that compose the background and clothing. However Bottini departs from Lautrec's style in that the scene at a bicycle racetrack is one of sophisticated elegance in a relaxed atmosphere, and women are both beautiful and depicted in an attractive manner.
