GEORGES BARBIER (1882-1932) BAL DES PETITS LITS BLANCS. 1922.
62x31 inches. J. E. Goossens, Lille.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; creases in image.
An illustrator, stage and costume designer, Barbier was extremely active in the 1920s. His archetypically Art Deco work was widely disseminated through the near-mythical periodical La Gazette du Bon Ton. For the Bal des Petits Lits Blancs, the major Parisian charity ball, Barbier illustrates one of his elegant women in a beautiful dress and a diffident gaze. The result, a style that would have been immediately recognizable to all ladies of fashion in Paris at the time, is a classic mannerist Art Deco image. He also designed the poster for the ball the following year.
