GEORGES BRAQUE (AFTER)
Ciel gris II.

Color lithograph, circa 1959. 227x92 mm; 8 7/8x3 5/8 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 108/275 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Maeght, Paris, with the blind stamp lower left. A very good impression.

In addition to his own printed oeuvre of approximately 190 etchings and lithographs, Braque (1882-1963) was instrumental in overseeing the creation of another 50 original prints based on his paintings, watercolors and gouaches and etched or lithographed and printed by the skilled professional printmakers at the Parisian workshops with whom he frequently worked. These "after" prints were published by Galerie Maeght in Paris during the 1950s/early 1960s. According to Maeght, "These graphics, whether etchings or lithographs, were pulled on fine papers in limited editions, from 100 to 300 copies, all numbered. In most cases the artist himself chose the pieces and the printing process which to him seemed most appropriate. He assisted in the execution of the graphics, observed and directed the work of the engraver or lithographer, did the work himself when necessary, corrected the proofs and gave his final approval by signing each example."
