GEORGES BRAQUE
La Théogenie d'Hèsiode.

Etching and drypoint on cream wove paper, 1932. 366x298 mm; 14 1/4x11 5/8 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the reduction of the plate and the removal of the bird remarqué lower right. Signed in brown crayon, lower right, and numbered 27/50 in pencil, lower left. Printed by Galanis, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. From the same-titled portfolio. A superb, dark impression with warm plate tone and inky plate edges.

Only 10 of the projected 16 etchings for the series were printed and editioned prior to Vollard's untimely death in 1939. These were dispersed piecemeal on the market after 1939. Maeght resumed publication of the series in 1954 and had the 16 etchings printed by Georges Visat, Paris, after the remarqués or outer borders had been cut down. Early impressions, with the remarqués and both signed and numbered, are extremely scarce. Vallier 20 G.
